Which Contract is the Most Suitable for my Hand

If you have a 'fit' in a suit then you will bid to game in that suit, if you have no fit but evenly spread suits with stoppers in each suit then NoTrumps is the place for your game.

1. Game in Opener’s Major Suit: 26 Total Points and a Trump Fit

If you hold at least three cards in your partner’s major suit, you have at least eight trumps between the two hands because an opening bid in a major promises at least five cards in that suit. A combined holding of eight or more trumps is called a fit.

When you have a fit in a major suit and enough combined points for game, that suit will usually be the best place to play.

2. Game in No-Trump: 25 Combined High-Card Points

If you and your partner have at least 25 combined high-card points but do not have a fit in opener’s major suit, 3NT will often be the best game contract.

3. "Game" in opener’s Minor suit 29 TP's between you and your partner

Because 9 tricks in 3NT scores the same as 11 tricks in 5♣ or 5♦. If 5 of a minor makes, then is is very likely 3NT will make more than 9 tricks giving a better score.

  • ♦ K 9 8 6
  • ♣ Q 7 4
Answer: You should bid 3NT. Your partner opened 1♣ you responded with 1♦, when partner rebid 2NT they are showing 17-18 HCP no major suit and a flat distribution, with your 11 HCP you have enough to be in 'game' in No Trumps
