Revolving Discards

Revolving discards are used at a defender's first opportunity to make a discard. A high spot card indicates suit preference for the next-higher available suit, while a low spot card indicates suit preference for the next-lower available suit.

The Revolving Discard System

With the Revolving discard System you have the possibility to request suit preference in two ways
A low (5 or below) discard indicates interest in the suit directly below (a low club however signals spades); a high discard(7 or above) signals preference for the suit directly above (a high spade signals clubs). In a suit contract, the trump suit is omitted in the signal.

Example of Revolving Discards

When forced to make a discard while declarer is playing the club suit:
  • A low spade is suit-preference for hearts, the next-lower suit.
  • A high spade is suit-preference for clubs, the “next-higher” suit.
  • A low heart is suit-preference for diamonds.
  • A high heart is suit-preference for spades.
  • A low diamond is suit-preference for spades.
  • A high diamond is suit-preference for hearts.

You cannot use the suit that declarer is playing to show suit preferences. In this case you cannot show a suit preference with the club cards

Using Revolving Discards

Declarer is playing spades and you need to make your first Discard. This is your hand. What do you discard to show partner your preference for a club suit lead?
